I finally went ahead and found a much better way of storing all my old drawings online. I don't know why I didn't think of this months ago... I went and set up a flickr account. Some day I might even go through them all and actually properly title, tag and describe all of them as well... woo look at me go!

Wow it's been exactly a month since I've updated anything here... whoops. Maybe now that fall is officially here (and my computer it back up and running again) I'll be happier to sit around and draw some more.
I've been playing way too much Castle Crashers on Xbox lately. Some might even argue that I've been a little obsessed with it...
It's a fun downloadable game on Xbox Live that I very highly recommend to anyone who loves colourful cartoon art and beating the stuffing out of hundreds badguys with swords and axes and giant fireballs! It's the sort of game I wish I had been part of making. I think it's brilliant.
I'd write a proper review here but as the lack of updates lately has probably suggested I'm feeling a little lazy! All I can say is that if you have an xbox there's really no reason not to at least try the free demo and if you in any way enjoy the demo you will love the rest of the game. Unfortunately the online multiplayer has some technical problems at the moment but according to their blog they are working on a patch that should come out any day now.

Fantasy Flight is releasing the very straight-forwardly-titled game Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game later this year. I had seen it announced a while back and assumed it was probably going to be terrible like most games based on TV shows but the latest word from people who have managed to get their grubby hands on the 200 early copies of the game released at GenCon last week have all been saying nothing but positive things about it (early copies are popping up on ebay for insane amounts of money for anyone interested).
The basic idea of the game is that 3 to 6 players all start out as humans aboard the Battlestar Galactica who are being chased across the universe by the Cylons (yay evil robots!). They have to work together to make sure there is enough fuel, water, food etc. while making 'jumps' through space to try and escape. After so many jumps the humans win. The twist is that at the start of the game each player takes a card identifying them as either human or Cyclon. They don't get to look at this card until later in the game though, so at the start, nobody knows if they are a cyclon or not. Later in the game you get to secretly look at your card and find out what you really are. At that point you can secretly try to mess with everyone else in the game to make the humans fail. Eventually you will be found out and can start openly fighting against the human players.
There is a lot more to the way the game works that I won't go into here but you have ship battles, all the characters from the show, political stuff going on and lots more. It sounds a lot like a much more involved sci-fi version of one of my favourite cooperative-games-with-a-secret-traitor Shadows Over Camelot.
Anyway, I'm sure I'll get my hands on it when it comes out some time in late October/early November and maybe put a quick review up on here.
Here's to hoping to get to be a crazy Cylon in my first game! Woo

I just finished the first episode of American McGee's Grimm which is an episodic game being offered over at Gametap. I haven't enjoyed an American McGee game since 2000's Alice so I went into it feeling pretty skeptical...
As it turns out it's not half bad. It's sort of a cross between Fractured Fairy Tales (from Rocky and Bullwinkle) and Katamari Damacy (with someone who's completely disturbed mashing them together). The basic idea is that each episode starts with Grimm telling the original version of a fairy tale (which is shown in a very stylized string puppet theater-looking cutscene). He then tells you why it's stupid... and the game starts with you entering the story (as Grimm) from the beginning basically trying to ruin and destroy everything that going on.
You do this by being stinky! Basically there is a cloud of stink around you that converts everything it touches into an smelly 'evil' version of whatever it used to be. People, lamps, shrubs, pot-bellied stoves...anything you get close to transforms as you walk near it. The trick is that there is a bar at the top of the screen that shows HOW stinky you are (smelly, stinky, gross, foul, rotten, nasty and so on) and some items won't turn 'evil' unless you are a certain level of smell. You raise that meter by running around making anything you can stinky and evil. The more stuff in the level that smells bad, the higher the bar at the top of your screen. This is similar to how Katamari Damacy has you rolling up smaller items at first to make yourself bigger so you can roll up larger items later.
The graphics are super simplistic and cartoony but I think they work for a downloable game. The animations that show things converting to evil are oddly satisfying as you move your cloud of stink around and the main fun I had with the game was actually trying to see what people or things would look like once I made them stinky.
When you finish all the levels in the episode Grimm retells the whole story in another puppet theater-style cutscene with everything messed up and disastrous. People explode, things catch on fire, children run screaming...it's loads of fun. :)
I don't know what anyone else will think of it because it is a VERY odd little game but I enjoyed the first episode. I'm not thrilled with episodic gaming in general though so I'll probably wait until the whole first season is over and just buy it all together as one game (like they did with Sam & Max). It's also INCREDIBLY short, but I can totally see myself playing through the whole thing all over again just to look for hidden items and enjoy the mayhem you create while running around.
Actually I should probably mention I ran into some serious technical problems with the sound when I was playing it too. It started playing horrible static and a lot of the sound effects stopped working completely. Starting the game over seemed to fix it but I imagine eventually it will start doing it again. It's a shame because the voice acting and sound effects in the game were surprisingly good when they worked properly.
The first episode is free (I believe for a very limited time) and the second one (Little Red Riding Hood) comes out August 7th. I have no idea what they are going to charge for later episodes but considering the length I hope it's only a few dollars.

( 3 / 554 )I just stumbled across this crazy video of this new game that has you printing out a paper cube that you can show to a webcam and it displays a 3d image on the cube (on your computer screen) and you tilt the cube to control a little guy that walks around inside the cube. It looks like some crazy Escher painting as a 3d webcam game...
The game itself doesn't look that exciting but it certainly opens the door to possibilities for all sorts of crazy interactive games... someone with a bit more game programming experience needs to jump in and play around with this concept!
[Note: the computer I'm on right now doesn't have sound so I have no idea what is being said during this video]
